Artist Knox: Breed Specific Styling
Written by Artist Knox

Its my opinion that it's perfectly fine not to have your furry in its traditional breed specific cut. When we take into consideration how each breed originated, we come to the understanding that 1) there are over 150 AKC registered dog breeds 2) some breeds date back as far as 4,000 years and 3) each breed was literally designed to perform certain tasks while being able to adapt to its sometimes harsh environment. Dogs were fully functional in their specific roles long before the development of modern society. In essence our society has "relieved" our furry friends of most of their duties.

My Shih-Tzu Bumpy Johnson originated in China. His breed dates back over 3,000 years. Shih Tzu's, known for their beautiful, long, luxurious hair, were widely used by the royal families as lap dogs. Also serving as traveling companions and body warmers during China's notoriously brutal winter months. It has been said that during these winter seasons some emperor's would have as many as 20 dogs curled up in their beds.

At my shop the "Artist Knox Pet Salon" we offer a variety of cuts. For the customers who want the breed specific look but without the hassle, I offer what I call the "modified breed cut." This style allows the pet to have the look and symmetry of its breed. While being altered to focus on comfort and manageability. In these day and times its all about functionality and manageability. My recommendation is to give your dog a cut that fits your life style.

As a groomer it's important to me to uphold the history and tradition of breed specific grooming. Also it’s my duty to insure that all of my clients are comfortable and satisfied. Often times this requires that I groom their dog in a non-traditional manner. Either way (traditional or puppy cut) they still look great:)

My celebrity clients are big fans of my “modified breed cut” due to their busy schedule's. The non-traditional cuts are sometimes more desired especially with the celebrities who travel with their pets in tow. It’s important to them that the pet is comfortable at all times. So when they come into my salon I already have an idea of what style they are looking to achieve.

Thanks to the invention of central heat it’s not necessary to have our furry friends in their traditional breed cut. Having one's pure breed in a traditional cut can often times be costly and time consuming. Most pet owners don't have the time to dedicate to brushing and combing there pets every night to insure that the hair dose not get tangled or matted. So they opt for the alternative grooming, such as a puppy cut, or a teddy bear clip. These styles allow your pet to still look cute while creating a more manageable situation for both the pet and the owner. Even though breed specific cuts are recommend in order to accentuate the natural beauty and highlight the qualities of ones pet. They’re not mandatory.
