Leona Lewis is helping to spread the word about the World Society for the Protection of Animals’s program “Collars Not Cruelty.” Around the world 20 million dogs are rounded up and killed each year because of the fear of rabies. The danger is real. 55,000 people die annually after contracting this horrible and painful disease. But both human and animal deaths can be solved with a simple program.

Lewis and the WSPA are asking countries around the world to organize mass vaccinations instead of culling large numbers of dogs. After all, if you can round them up to slaughter them, surely you could just give them an injection instead. They would then put a red collar on the dog and know that that pooch doesn’t pose a threat. Simple, effective and humane.

Lewis said about the program, “I think it’s absolutely horrific that 20 million dogs are killed every year, often because of the fear of rabies, when there is an alternative solution. I really want to help WSPA to spread the word worldwide and end the cruelty that is happening at the moment. By educating people and getting vaccinations out there, we’re not only helping dogs, but entire communities.
