Dog Oral Hygiene Tips
Written by Allison Leighton

Caring for your dog’s teeth and gums is a vital part of maintaining your dog’s overall health.  Dogs are prone to tooth decay, gum disease and even organ failure without proper proactive oral hygiene.   In addition to your dog’s annual checkup, here are some easy ways to include dental care in your daily routine.

Brushing Teeth:  The most obvious way to promote dental health, is by simply brushing their teeth with a dog formulated toothpaste.  This will remove any loose plaque build-up and keep their breath fresh.   You should brush your dog’s teeth at least once a week.

Dry Food:  Feed your dog dry food. The coarse texture of dry food scrapes the surface of teeth and therefor removes plaque. Dogs are more susceptible to tooth decay when plaque collects.  Dry food also encourages proper digestion, which will result in fresher breath.

Chew Toys:  Provide your dog with firm toys to chew. This is a great way to boost oral health overall.  Chew toys not only aid in keeping teeth clean and strong, but also stimulates circulation of blood in the gums and provides the opportunity for dogs to exercise their entire oral cavity.

Keeping your dog orally healthy will save you time and money on unnecessary dental procedures.  This will make you dog an overall healthier and happier companion.

Dogs turn in circles before lying down because in the wild this instinctive action turns long grass into a bed.
