Known for its many unique gifts and traits the Rottweiler is certainly a leader among dogs. It is probable that the breed descended from the Italian Mastiff in Europe during the Middle Ages. The Rottweiler is a courageous dog and can be very devoted to their owner. By nature the breed is very loyal and protective of their masters. Although they can be tough to train, with a lot of practice and patience the reward in the end is worthwhile.
During the Middle Ages, Rottweiler’s were used for multi purposes by their owners. They were herders, guard dogs, messengers, draught dogs and even police dogs. Nowadays, these dogs are used for tracking, as a watchdog, as a guard dog, search and rescue, guides for the blind, competitive obedience and also carting. So what makes these dogs so unique and multi-talented? There bodies are built for manual labor. They are massive, muscular and very powerful. Their muzzle is well defined. Rottweilers have strong and complete dentition (42 teeth) with scissor bite. Their tails are docked and ears triangular. If you were to make a breed for multiple jobs, this is the breed. Not to mention they have a broad and deep chest. Full of power and ready to take charge, the breed can be a challenge for an owner.
Rottweilers are even tempered, brave and confident. In order to be a successful owner, one must be strong minded, calm and firm. They are highly intelligent and have proven to outsmart people if the owner isn’t careful. Obedience training should always start at a young age. As this dog can become very big as an adult, you want to make sure the dog is well mannered as a puppy. Allowing for socialization at an early age can also allow this breed to get along with smaller animals and even children. The biggest threat for this breed to have an owner that is not showing a leader like quality around the dog. This dog can sense that shy tendency and become the leader of you and your household. As the owner you have to show the Rottweiler that you are the captain and leader of the pack.

The Rotweiller can be very healthy as well. They have no real threats as health issues. Their most common problem is hip dysplasia or ACL damage. Living arrangements should allow the Rottweiler to roam around the backyard or house. Apartment life is okay, but this breed must have daily exercise. Exercise allows the dog to express itself and free pinned up energy. Shedding is average, but not in excess. These dogs can be as big as 24-27 inches high and weigh from 95-130 pounds. They live from 10-12 years of age.
